A thermistor is a device whose electrical resistance is controlled by temperature. Thermistors are available in two types: NTC thermistors, or negative thermal coefficient thermistors, and PTC thermistors, or positive thermal coefficient thermistors. In NTC thermistors, the resistance decreases proportionally with increases in temperature. PTC thermistors, on the other hand, have increasing resistance with increasing temperature. NTC sensors are typically used in a range from −55°C to 200°C. Most PTC thermistors are designed to operate with a transition temperature somewhere between 60°C and 120°C, however, devices can be manufactured that can switch as low as 0°C or as high as 200°C.
